The short answer

Most people arrive at a new door for one of three reasons: a section is damaged beyond repair, the door has reached the end of its life and repairs are stacking up, or the front of the house is being changed and the door is the largest single surface on it. All three are legitimate, and they lead to different conversations.
Replace the door, or repair it
Honest answers to the question people ask first.
One panel is dented after a vehicle hit it
Often a panel replacement rather than a new door. Sectional doors are built from stacked sections, and a single damaged section can frequently be swapped if the model is still available and the rest of the door is sound. We check availability before recommending a full replacement.
The door is old but it still works
Then keep it, and spend the money on springs, rollers and a tune-up. We will say so. A door that is balanced, quiet and safe does not need replacing because of its age.
Repairs keep coming back
When sections are rusted through at the bottom, hinges are tearing out of the steel, or the door has been rebuilt around damage more than once, replacement becomes the cheaper path. We will show you which parts are past repair rather than asserting it.
I want the house to look different from the street
The garage door is usually the largest visible surface on a San Diego front elevation. Panel style, window inserts, colour and hardware all change the elevation more than most exterior work does for the same money.
I want it quieter, the bedroom is above the garage
That is a door and opener conversation together: insulated sections, nylon rollers, a belt drive unit and isolated rail hangers. Changing only the opener rarely delivers what people expected.
Do I need a new opener with a new door
Not always. If your opener is sound and the new door weight is within its rating, it stays. If the new door is heavier, or the opener has no safety sensors, we will tell you before you order the door, not after.
The measurements that decide what fits
Headroom is the space between the top of the opening and the ceiling, and it decides which track and spring system can be used. Backroom is the depth from the opening into the garage, and it decides whether standard horizontal track will run. Side room decides whether the vertical track and the spring hardware have space to sit.
This matters in San Diego because a lot of the housing stock was not built with generous garages. Older central San Diego bays and converted detached garages frequently have low headroom, and the answer there is a low headroom track kit rather than a smaller door.
What the technician measures on the estimate visit:
- Opening width and height at more than one point
- Headroom above the opening to the ceiling or obstruction
- Backroom depth into the garage along the ceiling
- Side room each side of the opening
- Existing spring type, opener model and its condition
- Floor level and the seal gap along the bottom
Opener installation with a new door
A new door changes the weight the opener has to guide, so travel and force are always recalibrated even when the existing unit stays. Where a new opener is part of the job, we install chain, belt and direct drive units, fit the photo eye safety sensors, and program the remotes, the wall control and any exterior keypad before we leave.
Belt drive is the usual recommendation when there is living space above or beside the garage. Chain drive remains a sound choice for a detached bay where noise does not matter.
Opener installation includes:

Panel replacement
A sectional door is made of stacked panels, so damage to one section is not automatically a new door. Panel replacement depends on three things: whether the manufacturer still produces that section, whether the rest of the door is structurally sound, and whether a colour match is acceptable to you on an older door that has weathered.
We check all three and give you both prices, the panel and the replacement door, so the decision is yours with the numbers in front of you. Where the model is discontinued we say so rather than fitting a section that does not match.
Panel replacement is usually the right call when:
- One or two sections are damaged and the rest is straight
- The door is recent enough that the section is still produced
- Track, springs and rollers are in serviceable condition
- The damage is impact damage rather than corrosion through the steel
What installation day looks like
The old door and track come out, the opening is checked for square and for level, the new sections go in with new track, new springs sized to the new door weight, and new rollers and hinges. The opener is then set to the new balance and tested, and the old door and all packaging leave with us.

Questions people ask before they call
Can you replace one damaged panel instead of the whole door?
Often yes, if the section is still produced and the rest of the door is sound. We check availability and give you both prices so you can decide.
Do I need a new opener too?
Only if the new door is heavier than your unit is rated for, or the existing unit has no safety sensors. Otherwise we recalibrate what you have.
Is there a warranty?
New doors and new openers carry the manufacturer warranties for that equipment. We hand over the paperwork on completion.
My garage has very low headroom. Is a new door possible?
Usually yes, with a low headroom track kit. It is common in older central San Diego garages and it is a measurement question, not a reason to give up on the door.
How long does an installation take?
A standard single or double residential door is normally a same day installation. Structural work at the opening, or a door that has to be ordered, extends that and we tell you the schedule up front.
Do you take the old door away?
Yes. Removal and disposal of the old door, track and opener is part of the installation.
