The opener does not lift the door. The springs lift the door and the opener guides it. That single fact decides whether a new opener lasts or burns out, and it is why we will not bolt a new motor onto a door that is out of balance without telling you first. Getting the balance right costs less than the second opener.

The motor runs but the door does not move

Usually a stripped drive gear, a trolley off the carriage or a chain off the sprocket. On most units this is a repair, and a repair is the right call when the rest of the unit is sound. See the opener repair page.

It works, but it is loud enough to hear through the house

An older chain drive on a metal rail transmits every cycle into the ceiling joists. If the bedroom is over the garage, a belt drive or a wall mount unit is the change most people notice most.

There are no safety sensors at floor level

That is a unit old enough to predate the photo eye requirement. It is worth replacing on safety grounds alone, because there is nothing stopping the door closing on a child, a pet or a bumper.

The logic board has failed and the unit is discontinued

When the board is the failure and the part is no longer made, replacement is the only honest answer. We will tell you that plainly rather than fitting a salvaged board.

I want to open the garage from my phone

Most current openers include Wi-Fi and app control built in. Some older units can take an add-on module instead, which is cheaper than a new head. We will tell you which camp yours is in.

The garage has no ceiling room, or the ceiling is very high

That is a wall mount jackshaft opener, fitted beside the torsion bar instead of on a rail. It also suits a garage with storage racks or a car lift in the way.

Chain, belt or wall mount, and which one suits your garage

There is no single best opener, there is a best opener for the door, the garage and the room above it. Chain drives are the workhorses and they suit a detached garage or a heavy door where noise does not matter. Belt drives run on a reinforced rubber belt and are quiet enough for a bedroom directly above the garage, which describes a lot of San Diego homes.

Wall mount units, sometimes called jackshaft openers, bolt beside the torsion bar and drive the shaft directly. They free the whole ceiling, which matters if you have overhead storage, a car lift, a high ceiling or a low headroom track system that a rail will not clear. They also need a door with a properly supported torsion setup, so we check that before recommending one.

What a correct opener installation includes

Fitting the head unit is a small part of the job. The rest is what stops you calling us back.

On every opener installation we:

Balance the door by hand first, with the opener disconnected
Check the spring rating against the door weight and flag it if it is wrong
Mount the rail or the wall unit into solid structure, not just drywall
Fit and align the photo eye safety sensors at floor level
Set the travel limits and the open and close force to the door
Test the safety reverse on the floor and at the sensor beam
Program the remotes, the keypad and the in-car button if you have one
Remove and take away the old unit and its rail

Manufacturer warranties and battery backup

New openers come with the manufacturer's own warranty on the equipmentThe exact terms depend on the model and the manufacturer, and we go through them with you before you choose.

California requires residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state to include a battery backup, so that the door still opens in a power cut. So any new opener installed in California includes one. The backup battery itself is a wear part and it is replaceable without changing the opener.

Worth knowing before you choose:

Battery backup is a requirement in California, not an upsell

Questions people ask before they call

Can you fit an opener to my existing door?

Usually yes, if the door is sound and correctly sprung. We balance and inspect the door first, because a new opener on a badly balanced door is a short lived opener. If something needs correcting we tell you before we fit anything.

Do new openers come with a warranty?

Yes. New openers carry the manufacturer's warranty on the equipment, and the exact terms depend on the model. We leave the model and serial number with you in writing.

How long does an opener installation take?

A straightforward replacement on an existing rail path is usually a single visit. A wall mount conversion, a new rail run or an install into a garage with no existing opener takes longer, and we tell you which one yours is.

Is a belt drive really quieter?

Noticeably, yes, particularly if there is a bedroom or living space over the garage. Much of the noise people blame on the opener is actually the door hardware, so we look at rollers and hinges at the same time.

Do I need a battery backup?

In California, residential openers sold or installed in the state are required to have one, so any new opener installed here includes one. It also means the door still opens when the power is out, which matters if the garage is your only exit.

Can I keep my old remotes?

Sometimes, if the frequency and rolling code system match. More often the new unit comes with its own remotes and we program those, plus your car's built-in buttons and a wireless keypad if you want one.
