The short answer
A snapped cable or a door off its track needs the door supported and unloaded before anything is moved. We re-spool or replace the cables, straighten or replace the affected track, change damaged rollers and hinges, and rebalance the door. Call (619) 324-8173. Stop using the opener until we arrive.
Cables and track are the parts that turn the spring's stored energy into a door that goes straight up. When a cable leaves its drum or a roller leaves its track, the load goes sideways into parts that were never meant to carry it, and each further cycle of the opener widens the damage from a cable job to a track and section job.

One side of the door is higher than the other
A cable has come off its drum or has snapped, so one side is being lifted and the other is not. The door is wedged in the track by its own angle. Do not try to level it by hand, because the moment it frees itself that side drops.
There is a loose, frayed or hanging cable
Cables fray from the bottom fixture upward, usually where water sits, and they fray long before they part. A visibly frayed cable is a failure in progress and both cables get replaced as a pair, because they have carried the same load for the same time.
A roller has jumped out of the track
Either the roller stem is worn, the track is bent or out of alignment, or the door was run against an obstruction. We put the door back on properly, then fix the reason it came off, which is the part most quick fixes skip.
The track is bent, kinked or pulling off the wall
Common after a vehicle contact or after a door has been forced. A kinked track will keep throwing the roller no matter how many times the door is reseated. Bent sections get straightened where that is sound, and replaced where it is not.
The bottom of the door is damaged or the fixture is pulled out
The bottom bracket holds the cable and is under full spring load. It must never be unbolted with the door up or with tension in the system. Leave it and call, this is the single most dangerous fixture on the door.
The door came off after hitting something
Tell us what it hit and how fast. Vehicle contact usually means track, rollers, a section and sometimes the opener rail all at once, and we would rather bring the right parts the first time.
Why cables come off in the first place
A cable does not usually fail on its own. It fails because something else changed first: the door lost balance after a spring weakened, the door was closed onto an obstruction and one side went slack, the drums were set unevenly, or the bottom fixture corroded and moved.
That is why a cable repair that only replaces the cable is half a job. We look for the reason the drum unwound, and correct that, or you will see us again.
The usual root causes:
- A weak or broken spring letting the door drop unevenly
- Closing onto a bin, a bike or a trailer hitch
- Corroded bottom fixtures on coastal and damp garages
- Drums set at different tensions at the last service
- Worn nylon or steel rollers binding in the track
How the repair actually goes
The door is supported and the spring tension is managed before anything is unbolted. Only then does the door come back into the track. Reversing that order is how people get hurt and how a repairable door becomes a replacement door.

Questions people ask before they call
Can I put the door back on the track myself?
We do not recommend it. The door is under spring load even when it looks still, and the bottom fixture that holds the cable is the most dangerous bolt on the door.
Do both cables need replacing?
Yes, as a pair. They have carried the same load for the same time, so a single replacement leaves you with one new cable and one that is next.
Can a bent track be straightened?
Sometimes. A gentle bow in a horizontal track can be corrected. A kink, a crushed section or a pulled anchor is a replacement, and we will show you which one you have.
My door came off after a car hit it. Is the whole door ruined?
Often not. Doors are sectional, so a damaged panel can frequently be replaced while the rest of the door stays. We assess the track, the rollers and the opener rail at the same time.
Why did my cable rust through?
Standing water at the bottom fixture and salt air near the coast are the two usual answers in San Diego. Where that is the cause we look at the bottom brackets and the rollers too.
