The short answer
A garage door is built from separate sections, so a single damaged panel can often be replaced on its own instead of buying a whole door. Whether that works depends on the make, the model and whether the section is still produced. Send a photo through the form or call (619) 324-8173 for a free estimate.
The honest version of this job is that sometimes it works beautifully and sometimes it does not. A recent, common door with a current section is a clean swap. An older door in a discontinued style, or one with three damaged sections and a bent track behind them, is money spent twice. We would rather tell you that from a photo than after we have taken the door apart.
What happened to the door?
Open the closest line. Whatever it is, take a photo before anything gets moved, especially if a vehicle or an insurer is involved.
A car backed into it
The most common one by far. Check three things for us: how many sections are damaged, whether the door still runs, and whether the track behind the impact is bent. Do not run the door to test it if the track looks pushed in.
One section is dented but the door still works
Good sign. If the mechanism is untouched, this is a cosmetic replacement and it can often be a single section. We still check the hinges and rollers on that section, because impact bends hinges quietly.
The bottom section is rusted or delaminating
Common near the coast and in garages that take water under the door. The bottom section takes the worst of it and it also carries the bottom brackets and cable ends, so this one is structural rather than cosmetic.
A panel is cracked or split across the middle
On a wide door this is often a strut problem rather than an impact. The top section flexes where the opener arm pulls on it. Replacing the section without adding the strut means it cracks again.
The door is bowed and the sections do not line up any more
That points at damage past the panel: bent track, a twisted torsion bar or hinges pulled out of the section. Stop using the door and let us look before any part is ordered.
Someone hit it and the door will not open at all
Treat that as an emergency, not a panel job. The door may be jammed against bent track and the cables may be off their drums. Call rather than sending the form, and do not force it with the opener.
When a single panel replacement is the right call
Sectional doors are made to come apart. Each section bolts to the ones above and below through hinges, so a damaged section can be unbolted and swapped without touching the rest of the door, as long as a matching section can still be obtained. That is the whole question, and it is a manufacturing question rather than a mechanical one.
We identify the door from the label on the inside of a section, or from the hardware and the panel profile if the label has gone. From there we can tell you whether the section is current, whether the finish will match the rest of the door, and whether the swap is worth doing.
A single section swap usually works when:
- Only one or two sections are damaged
- The door make and model can be identified and the section is still produced
- The track, rollers, hinges and torsion bar behind the damage are undamaged
- The door is not so weathered that a new section will stand out
- The damage is impact or dent rather than rot through the whole run
When a whole door is the better answer
We would rather lose the panel job than sell you a repair that leaves you with a door that looks patched and still runs badly. There are a few situations where replacing the door is simply the better use of the same money, and we will say so on site.
Colour match is the one that surprises people. A door that has been in San Diego sun for a long time is not the colour it left the factory, so a brand new section in the original finish can read as a patch even when it is technically the correct part. On a street facing door that matters, and it is your call to make with the facts in front of you.
A full door usually makes more sense when:
- The model is discontinued and no matching section can be sourced
- Three or more sections are damaged
- The bottom section has failed structurally and the brackets have pulled
- The track, bar or opener were damaged in the same impact
- Sun fade means a new section will never match the rest of the door
- The door is uninsulated and you were already thinking about upgrading

Panel work is the one job where a photo genuinely changes the visit. From two or three pictures we can usually identify the door, count the damaged sections and see whether the track behind them is straight, which decides what we bring and what we tell you on the phone.

Questions people ask before they call
Can you replace just one panel?
Often, yes. It depends on whether the door can be identified and whether that section is still made. Send a photo of the door and of the manufacturer label inside a section, and we can usually answer before anyone drives out.
My car hit the door. What should I do first?
Photograph it before anything is moved, do not run the door if the track behind the impact looks pushed in, and call us. If the door will not open at all, treat it as an emergency rather than a panel job.
Will the new panel match the rest of my door?
A recent door usually matches well. An older door that has taken a lot of San Diego sun will have drifted from its original finish, so a factory fresh section can stand out. We tell you what to expect before you commit.
How long does it take to get a section?
Sections are ordered rather than stocked, because they are specific to the make, model, size and colour. We give you the timescale once the door is identified, and we make the door safe to use in the meantime where we can.
Is a damaged panel dangerous?
The panel itself often is not, but the damage around it can be. Impact bends hinges and track, and a bent track can drop a door. If the door is running roughly or hanging unevenly after the damage, stop using it.
