The short answer
Most opener faults are one of five things: safety sensors out of alignment, a stripped drive gear, a failed logic board, worn travel and force settings, or a remote and receiver that have lost pairing. An opener is a small motor doing a guiding job. It should never be lifting the full weight of the door, so an opener that has started to struggle is often reporting a spring or balance problem rather than a fault of its own. That is the first thing our technician checks, because replacing a healthy opener on an unbalanced door buys you the same failure again.
Find your symptom
Each of these points to a different part. Tap the one that matches.
The opener hums or runs but the door stays still
On a chain or belt unit this is usually a stripped drive gear or a trolley that has been left disconnected from the carriage. On a screw drive it can be a sheared coupler. The motor sounding healthy tells you the motor is fine and says nothing about the drive.
The door goes down then reverses back up
Three candidates: the close force or travel limit is set wrong, an obstruction or a worn roller is binding near the floor, or the safety sensors are seeing each other intermittently. We test all three rather than adjusting the first one and hoping.
The door will not close and a light is flashing
That flash is the unit telling you the photo eyes are not aligned or not connected. Sun glare at low angles, a knocked bracket, a chewed wire or a dirty lens all produce it. Never disable the sensors to force the door closed.
The remote only works standing right under the door
Weak reception. Either the antenna wire hanging from the head unit has been cut or tucked up, the receiver is failing, or a new LED bulb or nearby electronics are drowning the frequency. LED interference is a genuinely common cause and an easy fix.
Nothing works, no lights, no wall button
Start with power: the outlet, the breaker, and the GFCI reset. If power is present and the unit is dead, it is usually the logic board or the transformer. Both are replaceable parts on most units.
It has become very loud or it shakes the ceiling
Chain slack, worn rollers, loose rail hangers or a failing bearing. Noise is the cheapest early warning a garage door gives, and it is worth acting on before the part it is warning about breaks.
Repair or replace: how we decide
We repair the unit when the failed part is available and the rest of the drive is sound. A gear kit, a logic board, a capacitor, a sensor pair, a trolley or a rail section are all normal repairs.
We recommend replacement when parts for the unit are no longer produced, when the drive has worn past the point where a single part restores it, or when the unit predates the safety reverse and photo eye requirement. In that last case a repair is the wrong advice, because the sensor system is the part that stops a door closing on a child.
Signs replacement is the honest answer:
- No safety sensors fitted at all
- Logic board no longer available for the model
- Repeated failures on the same drive within a short period
- Rail, trolley and gear all worn together

Questions people ask before they call
Can you fix my opener or do I have to buy a new one?
Most units are repairable. We replace gears, boards, sensors and trolleys every week. We only recommend a new unit when parts are gone or the drive has worn out as a whole.
My remote stopped working. Is that the opener?
Often not. It is usually the remote battery, lost pairing, a cut antenna wire or radio interference from an LED bulb. We test the receiver before condemning anything.
Do you install openers you did not supply?
Yes, we install customer supplied units, and we will tell you honestly before we start whether the model suits your door weight and headroom.
How quiet is a belt drive really?
Noticeably quieter than a chain, and the difference matters most when a bedroom shares a wall or a floor with the garage. The rollers and the rail hangers matter as much as the drive type, so we address those together.
Can you add a keypad or extra remotes?
Yes. Exterior keypads, extra remotes and wall controls are programmed on the visit.
The door closes then opens again. Is that dangerous?
It is the safety system working, which is good, but the cause needs fixing. Do not disable the sensors or hold the wall button to force it. Call and we will find which of the three causes it is.
