North County is not one place and we do not treat it as one. The coastal strip runs on salt air and older beach-town garages with narrow alleys behind them. The inland side runs on heat, wider lots, three car garages and heavy insulated doors under gate codes. The failure modes are different, so the parts we load before we set off are different too.
Which of these is your door doing?
Pick the closest line. It tells us which parts to load before the drive north, and that is the difference between one visit and two.
Loud snap, and the door will not come up
A broken torsion spring, and on a wide North County double door it is usually a pair. Leave the door down, do not keep pressing the button, and call. On a two spring door we change both, because they have run the same cycles.
The cable is hanging loose on one side
The cable has come off its drum or snapped. The door is now held on one side only and it can drop. Keep everyone clear, do not use the opener, and do not try to lift it by hand.
Everything is stiff and the door screeches on the way up
Near the coast this is almost always corroded rollers and dry bearings. Inland it is more often dust packed into the track and hardened lubricant. Either way it is a service visit, and noise is the cheapest warning a door gives.
The opener struggles on a hot afternoon and is fine at night
A thermal cutout or a tired capacitor on a motor that is working too hard, usually because the door is out of balance. The fix is the balance first and the opener second.
The door works, but the wind rattles it and the seal is gone
Bottom seal, stop moulding and hinge play. Coastal North County chews through bottom seals and the retainer they sit in. It is a small job that stops sand, water and rodents coming under the door.
It is a gated community and you will need a code
Tell us on the call and we will get the gate code, the guard house name or the resident contact sorted in advance. It is the single most common reason a North County visit slips.
Coastal North County and inland North County
On the coast we work Del Mar, Solana Beach, Cardiff, Encinitas, Leucadia, Carlsbad and Oceanside. These are older beach-town lots with tight driveways, alley-loaded garages and a lot of single-width doors on properties that now carry two cars. Salt reaches every metal part.
Inland we cover Rancho Santa Fe, Poway, San Marcos, Vista and Escondido. The housing is newer and larger, the doors are wide double and triple openings, and many are behind gates or inside an association with its own rules about exterior appearance. Heat and dust do the damage here rather than salt.

Wide doors change the job
A sixteen foot double door is not two single doors. It weighs more, it flexes more across the middle, and it needs a strut across the top section to stay straight under an opener. Plenty of North County doubles were fitted without enough strutting, and the first sign is the top section bowing where the opener arm pulls on it.
Wide doors also punish small errors in spring rating. A pair of springs that is close but not correct will still lift the door, and it will still wear the opener out and pull the door out of square. We measure wire diameter, inside diameter and length against the door weight before we quote a spring on a wide opening, rather than fitting whatever is on the van.
What we check on a wide North County door:
- Strut across the top section, and whether the opener arm has bowed it
- Spring rating measured against the actual door weight, not the door size
- Both cable drums spooling evenly, so the door stays square
- Track spacing across the full width, top and bottom
- Opener rail length and whether the drive suits the weight
- End bearing plates and centre bearing, which carry more load on a wide bar
Getting to you, honestly
We are based in San Diego and North County is a real drive, mostly I-5 for the coast and I-15 for the inland cities. We would rather give you a window we can hit than a window that sounds good on the phone, so the arrival time you get will account for the freeway at that time of day.
Two things help more than anything else. First, gate codes and community access sorted before we set off. Second, an accurate description of the fault, ideally with a photo, so the parts are already on the truck when we leave rather than an hour away.

Questions people ask before they call
How far north do you go?
Oceanside on the coast and Escondido inland are the regular edges of the map, and we work everything in between. If you are outside that, call and ask rather than assuming, because we cover more of the county than we have pages for.
Is there a travel charge for North County?
You get the price before the work starts and there are no hidden fees added afterwards. If anything about the location changes the price, you hear it on the phone, not at the door.
Can you do same day in North County?
Often, and it depends on the part and the time of day. Springs, cables, rollers, sensors and common opener parts are on the truck. A colour matched panel or a specific opener model has to come in first.
My community has an architectural committee. Does that matter?
For a repair, no. For a new door or a visible change of appearance it can, and several North County communities review exterior changes. Check with your association before you order a door, not after.
The garage is behind a gate and I am at work.
That is normal here. We need a way in and a way to reach you for the price approval. Give us the gate code and a contact number on the call and we can usually work around you being out.
Do you handle the coastal corrosion problem properly?
Near the water we check cables, bottom brackets, hinges and roller bearings on every visit, because those corrode together. Replacing a spring on a coastal door and ignoring a pitted cable is how you end up calling twice.
